Nigeria once again demonstrated its dominance in adaptive sports by securing seven medals at the 2024 Paralympic Games. The outstanding performance included three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals across various categories, cementing Nigeria’s reputation as a powerhouse in the Paralympic movement.

Among the notable athletes was powerlifter Lucy Ejike, who won her fifth Paralympic gold medal in the women’s 61kg category. Ejike, a veteran of the sport, lifted a new Paralympic record of 145 kg, further solidifying her legendary status. She expressed her joy at the achievement, dedicating her victory to all Nigerians and promising to inspire the next generation of athletes.

In the men’s powerlifting event, another gold came courtesy of Paul Kehinde, who claimed the top spot in the 65kg class. Kehinde, already a world champion, showed resilience and determination, overcoming a shoulder injury that had plagued him in recent months.

The track and field events also yielded success for Team Nigeria. Flora Ugwunwa, competing in the javelin F54 category, clinched a gold medal with a throw of 19.36 meters. Her victory brought joy to the Nigerian camp and added to her storied Paralympic career.

On the track, Lauritta Onye secured a silver in the women’s T40 shot put, narrowly missing out on gold by less than a meter. Onye, known for her dynamic personality and powerful throws, remained upbeat about her performance, calling it a testament to hard work and dedication.

In addition to these stellar performances, Team Nigeria also secured two bronze medals in wheelchair racing and one in para table tennis, both won by debut athletes whose names are now etched in Nigeria’s sporting history.

Nigeria’s seven medals mark a continued legacy of success at the Paralympic Games. The Nigerian Paralympic Committee expressed pride in the team’s achievements, noting that it reflects the athletes’ perseverance and the country’s growing commitment to supporting adaptive sports.

The Paralympic Games in Paris have been an event of immense inspiration, and Team Nigeria’s showing will no doubt inspire future athletes to pursue greatness, regardless of challenges they may face.
