Nigeria Leads Africa in Number of Universities but Struggles in Global Rankings

Story: written by Peterson September 2,2025
Nigeria now has the highest number of universities in Africa, but the country continues to lag behind in global and regional higher education rankings.
As of September 2, 2025, data from the National Universities Commission (NUC) shows that Nigeria hosts over 300 accredited universities, comprising federal, state, and private institutions. This growth places Nigeria ahead of other African countries in terms of university numbers.
However, education analysts note that quantity has not translated into global quality recognition. In the latest international university rankings, only a few Nigerian institutions made it to the top 1,000 worldwide, with none in the top 500.
Experts attribute the gap to funding challenges, poor research output, brain drain, and infrastructural deficits. Professor Adewale Banjo, an education policy analyst, explained that “Nigeria’s universities need stronger research capacity, international collaboration, and sustainable funding models to improve their global standing.”
Despite the challenges, stakeholders believe Nigeria’s vast network of universities remains a potential hub for Africa’s higher education growth if reforms are implemented.
