The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, urging the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity.
In a post on his official X handle on Sunday, Obi lamented that the country is “bleeding,” citing the bloody weekend attacks in which eight personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were killed in Edo State, while five soldiers and 58 civilians were feared dead in Borno State.
According to the former Anambra State governor, the killings are clear evidence that Nigeria is facing a full-scale security emergency.
“When over 100 Nigerians are killed in a single weekend, our casualty figures rival those of countries officially at war. This is no longer business as usual,” Obi wrote.
He condoled with the families of the victims and urged the government to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Obi further stressed the need for a national war on insecurity, calling for the mobilization of every resource, agency, and state in the fight to restore peace and stability.
“It is time to suspend all distractions and begin the urgent process of reclaiming our nation from lawlessness,” he added.
