Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has declared that Nigeria is effectively at war, urging President Bola Tinubu to shift focus from infrastructure projects to the urgent task of securing lives across the country.
Obi’s call came via a statement on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, following the gruesome killing of over 100 people — including military personnel — by suspected terrorists in Zamfara State.
“This goes beyond politics; the soul of our nation is bleeding,” Obi wrote. “With the brutal killings in Zamfara, including our brave military men, Mr. President, it is time to accept the inevitable truth and act decisively. Nigeria is at war. We can no longer afford the dangerous denial.”
The former Anambra State governor lamented the alarming rate of violent deaths in Nigeria, warning that the frequency of killings now rivals — and in some cases surpasses — that of nations officially at war.
“The number of lives lost in Nigeria now mirrors countries at war. In fact, the death toll here often exceeds theirs,” he stated.
Obi emphasized that the government must urgently shift its focus from ceremonial infrastructure launches to real-time action that protects citizens’ lives.
“Governance should no longer be about cutting ribbons or dominating front pages with new projects. It must now be about saving lives and restoring security,” he added.
Obi’s remarks come amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s escalating insecurity, with repeated attacks by terrorists and armed groups across northern states raising fears of a full-scale national crisis.
