The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has submitted its recommendations on the proposed state police structure to the Nuhu Ribadu, paving the way for further legislative action by the National Assembly.
The update was provided by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, following a meeting with Bola Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos.
According to AbdulRazaq, consultations on state policing are ongoing among key security stakeholders under the coordination of the National Security Adviser. He noted that the governors’ submission will now be reviewed and transmitted to lawmakers to develop an appropriate legal framework.
The governor stressed that the engagement also reaffirmed the commitment of state leaders to deepen cooperation with security agencies in tackling insecurity, while also focusing on infrastructure development and improving citizens’ living conditions.
He added that governors across the federation are determined to strengthen efforts against terrorism and drive policies that enhance national stability and growth.
The push for state police continues to generate nationwide debate. Proponents believe decentralised policing will improve response time and community-level security, while critics warn of possible misuse by state authorities.
Meanwhile, earlier steps toward the initiative included the formation of a committee by the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, tasked with working out implementation strategies for the proposed system.
