In a bold move to put Nigeria on the global motorsport map, Opus Race Promotions, led by former Premier League footballer Marvin Sordell, has unveiled plans to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja.
The group has received initial support from the federal government and is in ongoing discussions with Formula One Management and the FIA. The proposal includes building a world-class circuit and establishing a Motorsport Museum, as well as a STEM and technology hub to promote youth innovation.
“This isn’t just about a race. It’s about showcasing Nigeria’s potential and creating a legacy of innovation, tourism, and opportunity,” Sordell said.
While the full financial and logistical details are still being discussed, the proposal has sparked excitement among motorsport fans and investors. If approved, Nigeria would become the second African country after South Africa to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
