Nigeria and Brazil have signed a landmark agreement to commence direct flights between the two countries, eliminating the need for passengers to transit through third countries. The move is aimed at boosting trade, tourism, and diplomatic relations between Africa’s largest economy and South America’s biggest nation.

The Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) was signed during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s two-day official visit to Brazil, according to a statement released on Monday by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

The agreement was formalized by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo SAN, and Brazil’s Minister of Transport, Silvio Costa Filho, in the presence of both Heads of State, President Tinubu and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Strengthening Economic and Cultural Ties

According to Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Aviation Minister, the deal is expected to “foster stronger economic integration, facilitate cultural ties, and enhance diplomatic cooperation between both nations.”

The new direct routes will connect Lagos and Abuja with Brazilian cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, creating fresh opportunities for business, tourism, and investment.

President Lula da Silva welcomed the partnership, reaffirming Brazil’s interest in expanding cooperation with Nigeria in aviation, agriculture, infrastructure, and trade.

High-Level Delegation

President Tinubu was accompanied to Brazil by senior government officials, including:

  • Wale Edun, Minister of Finance
  • Bianca Onoh Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs
  • Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development
  • Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture

As part of the state visit, Tinubu is also scheduled to meet with the heads of Brazil’s Senate, Chamber of Deputies, and Supreme Federal Court to deepen parliamentary and judicial cooperation.

Background

Discussions on direct air connectivity between Nigeria and Brazil first began in October 2024. With the agreement now sealed, stakeholders believe it will reduce travel costs, shorten flight times, and stimulate bilateral trade, given the strong historic and cultural ties between both nations.

“The working visit, which continues tomorrow, will also feature high-level engagements across multiple sectors, underscoring both nations’ commitment to building a future of mutual growth and prosperity,” Moshood added.
