In a powerful state of the nation address delivered on Sunday in Lagos, prominent Nigerian cleric and former presidential aspirant, Pastor Tunde Bakare, raised alarm over what he described as the escalating “political banditry” and systemic dysfunction under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking to his congregation at The Citadel Global Community Church in Oregun, Pastor Bakare urged Nigerians to urgently “declare a state of emergency” in response to the country’s worsening state of governance, legislative indifference, and alarming insecurity.

“Descent Into Tyranny” — Bakare Slams Rivers State Emergency Rule

Addressing recent political developments, Bakare harshly criticized the Federal Government’s decision to impose emergency rule in Rivers State. He described the move as an example of the country’s drift toward authoritarianism, stating:
“What we have witnessed since the start of the year is nothing short of tyranny and the unchecked misuse of power.”

He expressed concern that democratic institutions are being undermined, with elected officials enabling a culture of impunity.

Legislative Complicity and Silencing Dissent

Bakare also took aim at the National Assembly, condemning their role in the ongoing political crisis. He specifically referenced the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was recently silenced following her allegations of sexual misconduct against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He described the legislature’s actions as both undemocratic and oppressive.

Nigeria at a Crossroads: “Mafia State in the Making”

Calling for nationwide awareness and civic intervention, Bakare warned that Nigeria is in danger of evolving into a “mafia state” if unchecked power continues to rule.
“The crisis we face is not just about a flawed constitution — it’s also about those entrusted with leadership, who now act with impunity and godlike arrogance,” he said.

He implored President Tinubu to prioritize justice, equity, and humility in governance, urging him to “stop playing God” and restore trust in leadership through responsible action.
