Nigerian soldiers, supported by local vigilantes, engaged in a fierce gun battle with armed bandits on Monday evening at Dare Biyu village, near Beri in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who shared details on X, the clash occurred between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., leaving several bandits dead after a heated exchange of gunfire.
Unfortunately, two vigilante members, Yusuf Dan Basi and Bello Shagari, lost their lives in the encounter. Another, Naziru Lawal, sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving medical care at Beri Hospital.
Makama revealed that the bandits initially surrounded the joint security team but were forced to retreat after facing heavy resistance. The troops reportedly evacuated casualties while ensuring nearby residents were protected from harm.
“Despite the terrain challenges and the bandits’ encirclement strategy, troops successfully contained the situation, secured withdrawal routes for civilians, and prevented further escalation,” Makama stated.
Reports suggest the bandits attempted to reinforce their numbers using motorcycles, frequently switching riders to escape pursuit. Security sources believe they belong to a larger criminal network operating across Mariga, Kontagora, Magama, Rijau, and Mashegu local government areas.
Authorities have assured that operations will continue in the area to dismantle the armed groups threatening communities in Niger State.
