Chukwu, a former Super Eagles captain and head coach, died on Saturdayhttp://Super Eagles captain and head coach, died on Saturday at the age of 74. His death was confirmed by close friend and ex-teammate, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami.
Shortly after the news of his passing broke, a viral report alleged that the NFF was indebted to Chukwu. However, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, issued a firm denial, stating there is no record of such a debt in the federation’s files.
“There is no record in the NFF of any outstanding indebtedness to ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu,” Sanusi said. “During the first tenure of Mr. Amaju Pinnick’s administration, a committee was constituted to carefully examine the financial claims of coaches owed by past NFF boards. That committee had a clear mandate to verify and pay off all legitimate debts.”
Sanusi further explained that Chukwu served as a coach with the NFF from 2002 until 2005, when he was relieved following a World Cup qualifying match against Angola. He emphasized that no documentation exists showing Chukwu was owed any funds during or after that period.
He also issued a challenge to the public, urging anyone in possession of authentic and verifiable evidence of unpaid debts owed to any coach within the last 20 years to come forward.
“As a responsible and transparent organization, we will settle any verified debts owed to any coach who has served the national teams,” he assured.
