The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed cannabis farms covering 77.5 hectares, with an estimated yield of 193,491.1 kilograms since January 2025, the agency announced on Wednesday in Benin City.
State Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju made the disclosure during a meeting with Edo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Jerry Uwangue. He urged the government to confiscate the affected farmlands, noting that the lands could have contributed significantly to addressing food insecurity if cultivated with legal crops.
Ofoyeju emphasized that prosecuting cannabis cultivators would serve as a deterrent and guide future farmers toward legitimate agricultural activities. He added that the destruction formed part of NDLEA’s broader strategy to curb cannabis cultivation and strengthen drug control while promoting sustainable farming.
The NDLEA said the eradication targeted nine cannabis farms across the state and is complemented by the Alternative Development Programme under Brig. General Buba Marwa. The initiative encourages farmers to shift from illegal cannabis cultivation to high-demand food and cash crops such as cassava, maize, cocoa, and vegetables.
Ofoyeju highlighted plans to identify vulnerable farming communities and provide training programs to educate farmers about sustainable and profitable alternatives. He also discussed the legal frameworks for confiscating land used for illicit drug production.
Commissioner Uwangue commended NDLEA’s efforts and stressed the need for collaboration between agricultural authorities and law enforcement. He said providing alternative livelihoods for former cannabis farmers is key to promoting food security and economic growth in Edo State.
