The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS BEECROFT) has intercepted a fibre boat carrying about 4,000 litres of suspected Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) around the Atlas Cove area of Lagos in an intelligence-led operation to curb oil theft and other maritime crimes.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Captain Idongesit Udoessien, the Executive Officer of NNS BEECROFT, who represented the Commander, Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel, said the interception followed a surveillance mission guided by the Navy’s Maritime Domain Awareness System and the Falcon Eye facility.
“The patrol team stationed at Tarkwa Bay detected and intercepted a fibre boat loaded with approximately 4,000 litres of suspected diesel at the approaches to Commodore Pool, near the Atlas Cove. The suspects fled upon sighting naval personnel,” Udoessien stated.
He added that the seized product has been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos Command, for investigation and further action.
Udoessien reaffirmed that the operation aligns with the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla’s directive to maintain constant surveillance and eliminate economic sabotage within Nigerian waters.
“This success reflects the Navy’s unrelenting efforts to secure Lagos waterways and deter illegal bunkering and oil theft,” he said.
He also warned individuals involved in maritime crimes to desist or face arrest and prosecution, stressing that NNS BEECROFT would sustain intensified patrols and intelligence-driven operations across all waterways.
