A newborn baby girl has been rescued alive after being abandoned in a bush in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, near Hope Academy Primary School in the A. A. Koto area, where residents discovered the crying infant and immediately raised an alarm.
Police investigations revealed that the baby’s mother, a final-year student of the College of Education, Akwanga, allegedly dumped the child shortly after delivery. She was later arrested with the assistance of her friends and schoolmates.
Authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the act. However, the case has drawn public concern as incidents of newborn abandonment continue to rise in parts of Nigeria.
Just last week, a similar case was reported in Kebbi State, where a young woman, Maryam Atiku, was arrested for burying her baby alive after wrapping cloth around the child’s neck and mouth before dumping her in a bush.
Police in Nasarawa have assured the public that the rescued baby is receiving proper care and that the suspect will face prosecution in line with the law.
