NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Spread of Fake, Unapproved Edible Oils Nationwide

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the increasing presence of fake, substandard, and unregistered edible oils circulating in markets across the country.
In a public notice released on X on Tuesday, tagged Public Alert No. 039/2025, the agency warned that a surge of unsafe and illegally imported oils is spreading rapidly nationwide.
The warning followed a report submitted by Lebruni Agro Limited — a certified local producer of hygienically refined soybean (Liorga) and palm kernel oils. The company, after conducting an internal market investigation, identified several suspicious brands currently in circulation. These alleged counterfeit brands include FINO, PUR, OKI, SUPER DELICIEX, and LA JONIC, which are reportedly backed by hidden warehousing networks that support illegal distribution.
NAFDAC revealed that these adulterated oils, whose sources, safety standards, and production locations remain unknown, are being smuggled into Nigeria and openly sold in markets under different brand names.
The agency noted that the fake products have spread to major cities such as Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Warri, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ikom, Calabar, Lagos, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe, Bauchi, Makurdi, and Lafia, as well as border towns like Idiroko.
NAFDAC emphasized that these products have no traceable manufacturer information and lack valid NAFDAC registration numbers, confirming that they are not listed in the agency’s verified product database.
