MTN Group and Airtel Africa have signed a network-sharing agreement in Uganda and Nigeria, a move set to enhance connectivity for their combined 145.22 million subscribers in both countries.

The two telecom giants affirmed that the deal aligns with local regulatory and statutory requirements. The primary objectives include improving cost efficiencies, expanding network coverage, and delivering better mobile services, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Enhancing Digital Connectivity

Ralph Mupita, MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing digital solutions across Africa.

“As MTN, we are driven by the vision of delivering digital solutions that drive Africa’s progress. We continue to see strong structural demand for digital and financial services across our markets. To meet this demand, we are investing in coverage and capacity to ensure high-quality connectivity. At the same time, regulatory frameworks allow for resource sharing to enhance efficiency and improve returns,” Mupita stated.

Sunil Taldar, Airtel Africa’s CEO, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the benefits of network sharing while maintaining competitive market operations.

“As we compete fiercely in the market through our brand strength, services, and offerings, we are also building common infrastructure within regulatory limits. This will create a more robust and extensive digital highway, fostering digital and financial inclusion while avoiding redundant infrastructure costs. Ultimately, this translates into greater operational efficiencies and better customer experiences,” Taldar explained.

A Global Trend in Telecommunications

According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), shared mobile infrastructure significantly reduces network deployment costs, especially in rural and less commercially viable areas. The MTN-Airtel collaboration aligns with a global trend, following similar agreements such as the recent infrastructure-sharing partnership between Orange and Vodafone in the United Kingdom and Spain.

MTN and Airtel reiterated that despite sharing infrastructure, both companies will continue to operate independently and compete in the market. Beyond Nigeria and Uganda, they are exploring additional network-sharing opportunities in countries such as Congo-Brazzaville, Rwanda, and Zambia.

Furthermore, the agreement does not restrict either company from collaborating with other telecom operators in their respective markets, as both entities remain committed to improving network access and efficiency across Africa.
