Mob Destroys Immigration Checkpoint in Lagos After Officer’s Bullet Hits Woman

Tension erupted in the Igbogbele community of Badagry West, Lagos State, after a stray bullet reportedly fired by a Nigeria Immigration Service officer struck a woman, Hunsu Elizabeth, last Friday. The incident sparked outrage, with local residents setting fire to the immigration checkpoint in protest.

As the injured woman was assisted to safety, crowds confronted at least seven immigration officers at the scene, preventing them from leaving. Residents called for justice as the victim was rushed for medical attention.

Sesi Whingan, representing Badagry Federal Constituency, condemned the shooting, describing it as part of a growing pattern of reckless conduct by security agencies. In a statement on his official Facebook page, he said the incident endangered innocent lives and stressed the need for accountability.

“The high concentration of checkpoints and recurrent cases of officers chasing civilians into busy communities and marketplaces continue to put lives at risk. This is unacceptable and must stop,” Whingan said.

He added that his office would work with the leadership of the Nigeria Immigration Service and Nigeria Customs Service to ensure reforms prioritising safety and professionalism. He also urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasizing that the community’s peace and unity must be preserved.
