A powerful gas explosion on Sunday devastated several commercial stalls at Orisunmibare Market, located off Baale Street in the Orile-Iganmu axis of Lagos State.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:13 p.m., triggering widespread panic among traders and residents as flames engulfed goods valued at millions of naira. Witnesses disclosed that the fire originated from a gas distribution point stocked with multiple cylinders.
Confirming the situation, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, stated that emergency responders arrived swiftly and contained the inferno before it escalated further.
She noted that no fatalities were recorded, although one individual suffered a minor injury to the hand.
In a separate emergency response, firefighters deployed to the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway near the Berger Car Depot following a collision involving a 33,000-litre tanker transporting petroleum products. The tanker reportedly spilled fuel after crashing into a Mercedes-Benz Jeep and seven parked vehicles on display for sale.
Adeseye credited prompt intervention from the Ajegunle and Ijegun-Egba fire crews for averting a second major disaster. The fuel spill was successfully contained and later transloaded into another tanker, while efforts to recover damaged vehicles remain underway.
