Arsenal opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Athletic Club at San Mamés, thanks to second-half goals from substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

Mikel Arteta’s men found it difficult to break down the hosts for much of the game, with clear chances limited against a resilient Basque defence. The breakthrough came in the 72nd minute when Martinelli, introduced moments earlier, latched onto Trossard’s lofted pass to put the Gunners ahead with his first touch.

Minutes later, the Brazilian turned provider, setting up Trossard, whose shot deflected past goalkeeper Unai Simón to seal the win. The attacking spark from the bench proved decisive in what had been a tightly contested encounter.

Speaking after the match, Arteta praised both players:

“I could see in Martinelli’s eyes that he was ready. Leo too. Their energy and quality changed the game, and I’m delighted they made the difference tonight.”

Athletic Club, returning to the Champions League after 11 years, pressed aggressively and created problems for Arsenal, but the North London side remained compact in defence. Declan Rice’s return to the starting XI also provided stability in midfield as Arsenal managed the pressure of the San Mamés atmosphere.

The victory gives Arsenal the perfect start to their European campaign, as they look to build on last season’s semi-final run, where they fell short against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.
