Popular comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, has urged Nigerians to stop comparing their lives to what they see on social media, warning that much of the glamour displayed online is fake and carefully staged.

In a video posted on his Instagram page on Thursday, AY said social media often paints a misleading picture of wealth and success, where celebrities and influencers flaunt luxury items, vacations, and designer fashion that do not reflect their real lives.

According to him, some online personalities borrow clothes, wigs, and cars, or even pose in hotel lobbies to give the impression of affluence and success.

“Many of these so-called celebrities are living fake lives — they wear borrowed wigs, rent outfits, and pose with cars that aren’t theirs,” AY said. “Social media is like a movie set — it’s all make-believe. Don’t lose yourself chasing illusions.”

He advised his followers to focus on personal growth, live authentically, and embrace simplicity rather than fall into the trap of online competition and pressure.

“Grow at your own pace and stay content. What you see online isn’t always real,” the comedian concluded.
