Manchester United Held to 0-0 Draw by Leeds United as Matheus Cunha Impresses on Debut in Pre-Season Clash

Manchester United and newly-promoted Leeds United played out a goalless draw in their first pre-season friendly of the 2025/26 campaign, held in Sweden on Saturday. The match served as an early test for both sides as they began preparations for the new Premier League season.

Leeds United looked sharper in the first half, displaying energy and promise in attack, while Manchester United took control in the second half but failed to convert their chances. Kobbie Mainoo came closest to breaking the deadlock for the Red Devils, striking the crossbar late in the game.

Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha made his debut for Manchester United and was one of the standout performers. The 26-year-old, signed earlier this summer, showcased his strength and technical ability, frequently driving past Leeds defenders. Cunha nearly marked his debut with a goal but was denied the chance by teammate Chido Obi, who intercepted a goal-scoring opportunity before firing wide.

Teen sensation Diego Leon also made his first appearance for Manchester United, showing flashes of his potential. On the Leeds side, new signing Lukas Nmecha featured up front, adding physicality to their attack.

The match itself lacked major incidents and clear goal-scoring opportunities, but both managers took valuable insights from the performances. Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim will be particularly pleased with the improved intensity and structure in the second half.

Chido Obi started the match up front for United before being replaced at halftime by Rasmus Hojlund. The game further highlighted Manchester United’s urgent need to sign a top-tier centre-forward before the new season begins. While Cunha’s debut was promising, the Red Devils still lack a clinical striker capable of leading the line consistently. Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has been linked with a move to Old Trafford and could offer pace and power, but a true No. 9 remains a priority.
