Manchester United Step Up Transfer Push for Rafael Leao Amid “Complicated” AC Milan Talks

Story: Written by October 27,2025

Manchester United are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of AC Milan forward Rafael Leao, although negotiations between the two clubs are expected to be challenging due to the Serie A side’s high demands.

The Red Devils secured their third straight Premier League victory with a 4-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford, but defensive lapses remain a concern after conceding twice despite holding a 3-0 lead.

Recent signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo both found the net, with supporters optimistic that the club’s positive summer recruitment continues in upcoming transfer windows.

High Transfer Fee Could Hinder Agreement

According to a report from Fichajes, Manchester United are locked in complex discussions with AC Milan regarding Leao’s future. The Italian giants are said to be seeking a fee in the region of €80-100 million (£69-87 million), which may stretch United’s budget under financial constraints.

Player Profile: What Rafael Leao Brings to United

Leao’s numbers from last season were solid rather than sensational, registering 8 goals and 8 assists in 34 Serie A appearances. He has started the current 2025-26 campaign brightly with 3 goals in 4 matches, aiming to rediscover the prolific form that saw him hit 15 goals in 2022-23.

Key strengths include:

  • Explosive pace and elite dribbling
  • Strong physical presence on the left flank
  • Ability to create attacking overloads in transition

However, the Portugal international has been criticised for:

  • Limited defensive tracking
  • Inconsistency in pressing structures
  • Periods of low involvement out of possession

Does Leao Fit Ruben Amorim’s Tactical System?

Despite the winger’s star quality, his suitability for Ruben Amorim’s setup remains questionable. The United boss typically deploys two attacking midfielders behind a lone striker, reducing the need for traditional wide forwards.

Signing Leao could also disrupt the development of Benjamin Sesko, who is beginning to establish himself through the middle. In addition, a reduced defensive work rate from Leao may expose Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and others to increased pressure in midfield transitions.

Given United’s current squad structure, many believe investment would be better directed toward reinforcing defence and midfield, especially since Cunha, Mbeumo, and Sesko are forming a promising partnership
