Manchester United are preparing for life without Andre Onana, with reports suggesting the club is open to cashing in on the under-fire goalkeeper after a loan spell at Trabzonspor.
The 29-year-old shot-stopper, who joined United from Inter Milan in a £47 million deal in 2023, is close to sealing a temporary switch to Turkey for the remainder of the 2025/26 season. The move is expected to provide Onana with more game time while potentially boosting his market value ahead of a permanent transfer.
Onana’s Struggles at Old Trafford
Onana arrived at Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag’s first-choice goalkeeper but has endured a turbulent spell filled with high-profile mistakes. After missing pre-season through a hamstring injury, he was dropped at the start of the campaign in favor of Altay Bayindir.
A brief return in the EFL Cup against Grimsby Town worsened his situation, as errors led to both goals in a 2-2 draw before a poor penalty shootout performance further dented his confidence. Since then, he has fallen behind both Bayindir and new signing Senne Lammens, leaving him facing the prospect of being United’s third-choice keeper this season.
Loan to Turkey with an Eye on Sale
Turkish side Trabzonspor have emerged as frontrunners for Onana’s signature. The deal would see him earn more than his current United wages, with additional incentives from bonuses and a favorable 20% tax rate in the Super Lig.
Although Trabzonspor’s agreement does not include a purchase option, United hope a strong season in Turkey could pave the way for a permanent exit in 2026. The club has previously succeeded with this approach, selling winger Antony to Real Betis for £22m after a positive loan spell.
United’s Transfer Gamble
Onana remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2028, but his market value has dropped significantly from the £47m United paid Inter Milan two years ago. Club officials believe regular action at Trabzonspor could help rebuild his reputation and spark interest from European clubs in the next transfer window.
The Cameroonian, who has made 102 appearances for Manchester United with just 24 clean sheets, is expected to make his debut for Trabzonspor this weekend against Fenerbahce.
