Manchester United Blocked from Signing New Midfielder as Casemiro’s Future Creates Transfer Roadblock for Ruben Amorim

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly facing mounting frustration as the club struggles to bring in a new central midfielder during the ongoing summer transfer window. The major obstacle? The continued presence of veteran Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, whose high wages are complicating recruitment plans.

United were keen to offload Casemiro during the January transfer window, but the 33-year-old’s £300,000-a-week salary discouraged potential suitors. Despite his strong performances in United’s run to the 2025 UEFA Europa League final, the club remains open to offers as they seek to trim their wage bill.

According to reports from the Manchester Evening News, Casemiro’s status at Old Trafford is directly impacting Manchester United’s ability to sign a much-needed new midfielder. Amorim, who took charge earlier this year, has publicly acknowledged the need for added pace and creativity in midfield.

Speaking after the Red Devils’ goalless pre-season draw against Leeds United, Amorim said:
“We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park. It’s hard to bring the ball forward with our current options.”

Despite Christian Eriksen’s exit creating space in the squad, financial constraints and squad limitations are preventing United from moving swiftly in the market. Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, and Toby Collyer remain in contention for midfield roles, though Mainoo is being monitored closely by Tottenham Hotspur.

Additionally, Bruno Fernandes was previously linked with a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League but has opted to remain at Old Trafford, further limiting squad rotation options.

Sekou Kone Emerging as Surprise Midfield Solution

One bright spot for Amorim could be 19-year-old Sekou Kone, who has impressed during pre-season training in the United States. Initially lined up for a loan move to Swiss side Lausanne Sport, Kone now appears set to stay and fight for a first-team place after catching the eye of United’s coaching staff.

The young midfielder is expected to feature prominently in the Premier League Summer Series as Manchester United prepare to face West Ham United, Bournemouth, and other top-flight clubs in the U.S.

While Ruben Amorim remains hopeful of strengthening his midfield options before the close of the transfer window, Manchester United may need to first resolve the issue of high earners like Casemiro before any new arrivals can be confirmed.
