Man United eye January swoop for Conor Gallagher as Amorim seeks perfect midfield fit

Manchester United are reportedly preparing a fresh move for Conor Gallagher in the January transfer window, with manager Ruben Amorim eager to bring the midfielder into his system at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are said to have approached Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day regarding a possible loan deal for the 25-year-old, but the Spanish club insisted they would only consider a permanent transfer.
According to reports from Fichajes, United remain attentive to Gallagher’s situation in Madrid and could return with a new offer in the winter. A loan with an option to buy is believed to be Amorim’s preferred structure, though a straight permanent deal is not ruled out depending on the circumstances.
Gallagher, who joined Atletico from Chelsea in 2024, has made 53 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side, scoring four goals and providing six assists. However, the England international has struggled for regular starts this season and is thought to be unsettled in Spain.
The midfielder has four years left on his contract but is reportedly open to a Premier League return. United believe Gallagher’s work rate and versatility make him a strong fit for Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.
Gallagher previously represented Chelsea in 95 matches, netting 10 goals and delivering 10 assists, while also gaining top-flight experience on loan at Charlton, Swansea, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace. He has 21 England caps and featured in both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024 before being omitted by new national team boss Thomas Tuchel.
Mid-season deals between major European clubs are often complex, but Gallagher’s desire to return to England could give United an opening to finally land the midfielder in January.
