Manchester United have reportedly placed Edin Terzic on their managerial shortlist, viewing the former Borussia Dortmund head coach as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag if the Dutchman’s results fail to improve.

Ten Hag’s immediate future appears secure for now, as he is expected to lead the Red Devils into their upcoming clash with Brentford following the international break. However, mounting pressure at Old Trafford, due to the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season, means that another poor result could force the board to make a critical decision.

Former Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel has been consistently linked with the job at United, and rumors of a possible interim role for club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy have surfaced. Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, at 39, is seen by some within the club as a long-term solution for the managerial position.

According to The Sun, Edin Terzic, who led Borussia Dortmund to the 2024 UEFA Champions League final, has emerged as a genuine contender for the role. Although Dortmund lost to Real Madrid in the final, Terzic stepped down from his position after a successful campaign, surprising many in the football world.

“After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team. After nine years at BVB—six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach—I felt it was time for a new era at the club, led by a new man on the touchline,” Terzic told reporters after the final. “Everyone close to me knows this was a tough decision, but after much reflection, I believe it’s the right one. I wish Dortmund all the best in the future.”

In his two spells with Borussia Dortmund, Terzic took charge of 156 games, securing 83 wins, 20 draws, and 21 defeats, while also winning the DFB-Pokal. His impressive track record has made him a serious candidate for the Manchester United job.

United face a crucial period before the end of October, with four pivotal fixtures ahead. Following the Brentford clash, Ten Hag’s side will travel to Turkey to face Fenerbahce in the Europa League, then head to West Ham United in the Premier League, and close the month with an EFL Cup tie against Leicester City.

A successful run in these games is essential for Ten Hag to retain his position, as anything short of a turnaround could lead to his dismissal, with Terzic waiting in the wings as a potential successor.
