A man narrowly escaped death after a container-laden truck crushed a Toyota Sienna minivan along the busy Ikorodu Road corridor at Idi-Iroko, Lagos, in the early hours of Saturday.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the accident, which occurred around 1:30 am and involved a 40-foot Mack truck loaded with goods and a white Toyota Sienna with registration number LSR 267 GZ.
According to LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, preliminary investigations revealed that the truck was reportedly speeding and experienced brake failure, causing the container to detach and fall onto the minivan. The impact severely damaged the vehicle, trapping its sole occupant.
LASTMA’s midnight surveillance and emergency rescue team responded swiftly to distress calls and successfully rescued the trapped man. He was immediately attended to by the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) at the scene.
The truck driver allegedly fled the scene to avoid arrest or possible mob action.
The crushed Sienna was later towed to the Anthony Police Station for official documentation. Meanwhile, the truck and the detached container were moved to LASTMA’s operational base pending further investigation.
Authorities are urging truck drivers to conduct routine maintenance checks and adhere to speed limits to prevent similar accidents.
