The Adamawa State Police Command on Saturday night arrested a young man who climbed a 33kv high-tension pole in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area, demanding the resignation of President Bola Tinubu before he would descend.
SP Suleiman Nguruje, the command’s Public Relations Officer, disclosed to PUNCH Metro on Sunday evening that the individual, whose name remains undisclosed, was rescued and is currently in police custody in the state capital.
“The command is going to parade the man today (Monday) for attempting suicide. You know, attempting to commit suicide is a criminal offence under our constitution, so we are going to charge him to court,” Nguruje said.
He emphasized the police’s constitutional duty to protect lives, noting that any attempt by an individual to take their own life would be met with legal action. Efforts by our correspondent to obtain the man’s name were met with promises from the PPRO to release the information, but at the time of this report, the name had not been disclosed.
The incident unfolded on Friday, a market day in Mayo-Belwa, when the young man climbed the 33kv high-tension line along the Yola-Jalingo highway, vowing not to come down until President Tinubu vacated office.
Springnewsn investigations revealed that local residents played a key role in convincing the man to come down, after being engaged by the police. The rescue was successfully carried out on Saturday night.
When our correspondent visited the Adamawa State Police headquarters on Sunday evening, it was confirmed that the man was being held in protective custody at the Criminal Investigating Department (CID) of the Adamawa Police Command.
