The Malam-Audu Bridge, a crucial link between Pantisawa in Yorro Local Government Area and Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, collapsed on Thursday following several hours of heavy rainfall, leaving hundreds of commuters and pedestrians stranded on both sides.

The incident has disrupted transportation along the busy route, forcing travellers to take longer and more expensive detours to reach their destinations. Eyewitnesses said the bridge gave way suddenly without warning, though no casualties had been confirmed as of press time.

Residents expressed frustration over the failure of authorities to repair the Namnai Bridge in Gassol LGA, which collapsed last year, warning that the new incident could further cripple economic activities in the region.

“We are calling on the government to take this matter seriously because we have been cut off from the state capital and other parts of Taraba,” said Mallam Saliu, a community leader.

Others noted that the collapse would inevitably harm the local economy, particularly in Taraba North, and urged the state and federal governments to expedite reconstruction.

The collapse of the Malam-Audu Bridge marks the second major bridge failure in Taraba in just over a year, raising concerns about the state of critical infrastructure across the region.
