Public affairs analyst Mahdi Shehu has urged Nigerians in the diaspora to disregard recent comments by Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding the state of the nation, accusing him of misrepresenting the true condition of the country.
In a post shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, Shehu alleged that Akpabio presented an overly positive narrative of Nigeria during his engagements with Nigerians living overseas, claiming the message does not align with the realities on ground.
He asserted that millions of Nigerians continue to battle economic hardship, widespread unemployment, and hunger despite optimistic political rhetoric.
“About 139 million Nigerians are visibly hungry, over 60 million youths are unemployed, and more than 30 million children are severely malnourished,” Shehu wrote.
“Nigeria’s public debt has climbed to ₦170 trillion — and it is still rising. Returning home is at your own risk.”
The commentator also cited biblical passages — including Psalm 10:7 and Ephesians 5:6 — to emphasize his point about the dangers of being swayed by misleading leadership.
Shehu accused political leaders of normalizing dishonesty while citizens struggle under worsening social and economic difficulties.
“Our leaders have turned lies into a business and deception into a permanent culture,” he stated.
He appealed to Nigerians abroad to critically evaluate government claims and remain focused on the country’s ongoing challenges rather than political speeches that suggest otherwise.
