Liverpool Target £120m Alexander Isak Transfer as Newcastle Pursue Hugo Ekitike Deal

Liverpool have reportedly made a discreet approach to sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, as the Reds intensify efforts to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2025/26 season.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool are prepared to break their transfer record with a £120 million bid for the Swedish forward, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season. If completed, the deal would make Isak the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history, surpassing the current record held by Florian Wirtz.

Newcastle, however, are standing firm on their stance that Isak is not for sale. The Magpies’ resolve has been further strengthened by their recent qualification for the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League. Despite this, Liverpool have reportedly communicated their interest in the former Real Sociedad star to Newcastle’s top executives.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are actively pursuing a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike. The club has already seen a £70 million bid rejected but is expected to return with an improved offer. If the Magpies succeed in securing Ekitike, it could potentially open the door for Isak’s departure — especially if both strikers are not intended to coexist in Eddie Howe’s starting plans.

Sources suggest that Liverpool are also monitoring Ekitike’s situation closely, viewing him as a potential backup option should negotiations for Isak fail. However, Isak remains the club’s primary target as they seek to reinforce their squad following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota earlier this summer.

With Newcastle aiming to land Ekitike and Liverpool chasing Isak — while both clubs possibly holding overlapping interests — the transfer dynamics between the two sides could shape one of the most dramatic stories of this summer’s window.

As Liverpool eye attacking reinforcements and Newcastle weigh their options, fans from both clubs are bracing for what may be one of the most intriguing transfer sagas of 2025.
