Liverpool have reportedly made initial contact with Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta as the club intensifies efforts to sign a new striker, following uncertainty over Darwin Nunez’s future at Anfield.

According to Foot Mercato, representatives of the French striker recently met with Liverpool officials in Paris to discuss a potential move. The Reds are exploring options in the transfer market as they brace for possible departures, including Nunez, who may leave the club this summer.

Nunez scored in Liverpool’s emotional 3-1 pre-season victory over Preston North End, the club’s first match since the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother. Despite netting in the win, speculation continues to swirl around the Uruguayan’s future, with Napoli reportedly backing away from a deal due to the high cost involved.

With interest from Saudi Pro League clubs still on the table, Liverpool are expected to entertain offers for Nunez if a suitable bid is submitted — opening the door for a potential replacement.

Mateta Emerges as Key Target

Jean-Philippe Mateta has now emerged as a serious target for the Premier League giants. The 28-year-old is entering the final two years of his contract at Crystal Palace, and the FA Cup winners may be open to selling him for a fee in the region of €50 million (£43.5m) to €60 million (£52.2m).

Liverpool, however, face competition from Manchester United, who are also said to be monitoring the striker’s situation.

Mateta initially joined Palace on loan from Mainz 05 in January 2021 before securing a permanent move. After a challenging start to life in the Premier League, he has thrived under manager Oliver Glasner, becoming one of the league’s most improved forwards.

Over the last two Premier League seasons, Mateta has scored 30 goals, including 14 league goals last season, and played a key role in Palace’s FA Cup triumph, starting in five matches during their run to the title.

As Liverpool look to rebuild their attacking line following a summer of emotional and potential structural changes, Mateta is now viewed as a ready-made, top-flight solution.
