Lionel Messi Returns to Argentina Training Ahead of Crucial World Cup Qualifiers

Written by SpringnewsNG Media Limited

June 5, 2025Football legend Lionel Messi made a strong comeback on Monday, resuming training with the Argentinian national team after a seven-month injury hiatus. His return boosts Argentina’s hopes as they prepare for key World Cup qualifying matches.

Argentina is scheduled to face Chile in an away match on Thursday, followed by a home game against Colombia at Buenos Aires’ Estadio Monumental on June 11. Currently, Argentina leads the South American qualifiers with 31 points.

At 37, Messi is back in top form. He was recently named the Major League Soccer (MLS) Player of the Week for the second consecutive time, after delivering an impressive performance with Inter Miami—scoring two goals and providing three assists in a 5-1 victory over Columbus Crew last Saturday.

Due to several suspensions and injuries, Argentina will feature a significantly refreshed midfield against Chile, including three players making their international debuts. Among them is 17-year-old forward Franco Mastantuono from River Plate, who has attracted attention from major European clubs.

Meanwhile, striker Lautaro Martínez is set to join the squad on Wednesday after Inter Milan’s recent 5-0 defeat to PSG in the UEFA Champions League final.

Messi’s return adds much-needed experience and firepower to Argentina’s campaign as they aim to secure their spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
