The Lagos State Safety Commission has refuted any association with a woman seen in a viral video allegedly extorting residents in Oworonshoki while posing as a staff member of the agency.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Okoh Adewunmi, stated that the woman, identified as Mariam, has no connection with the commission.

“The attention of the Lagos State Safety Commission has been drawn to a viral video making the rounds on social media, in which one Mariam falsely claimed to be our staff and was accused of collecting money from residents in Oworonshoki,” the statement read.

Adewunmi stressed that the woman has never been employed by the commission and that her actions do not reflect the agency’s standards or operations.

She added that the commission maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, extortion, and all forms of unethical practices. Residents were also urged to report similar cases to the agency’s official complaint channels.

A video shared by Lagos Reporters showed the woman wearing a reflective vest bearing the Lagos State logo, as residents confronted her for allegedly demanding illegal payments during a so-called “safety inspection.”

In the footage, the woman admitted to collecting money from some residents who lacked proper documentation, claiming they preferred to “settle” her rather than visit the commission’s office.

Reports indicate that she extorted as much as ₦300,000 from residents under the pretense of conducting official safety checks — with none of the funds remitted to the state government.
