The Lagos State Police Command has launched a comprehensive security operation for the Christmas and New Year holidays, deploying thousands of officers across the state to curb crime, ease traffic flow and minimise road accidents during the festive period.

The security arrangement follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and is being coordinated under the leadership of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh.

According to the command, the operation is designed to protect lives and property before, during and after the celebrations. Officers drawn from conventional units, tactical teams and intelligence formations have been deployed statewide to detect and neutralise security threats.

To prevent criminal activities via waterways, marine police operatives have been stationed along Lagos rivers and coastal routes to intensify patrols.

Special security teams have also been positioned at strategic locations, while Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and tactical unit heads have been directed to sustain aggressive patrols, enhance police visibility and ensure round-the-clock surveillance.

The command stressed that all officers on duty must display professionalism, civility and firmness in the discharge of their responsibilities.

To manage the anticipated increase in vehicular traffic, the police disclosed that over 5,000 personnel have been specifically assigned to traffic control on major highways, inner roads and traffic-prone areas across the metropolis.

Amid concerns over rising road accidents during the yuletide, CP Jimoh recently held a strategic engagement with the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Dr Ayodele Ogunsan, and other key safety stakeholders.

The meeting brought together officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Lagos State Fire Service and the Federal Controller of Works, with discussions focused on sustainable measures to improve road safety.

The police also confirmed the deployment of joint task teams comprising conventional officers, tactical operatives and intelligence personnel to clamp down on traffic robbers, hoodlums and other criminal elements seeking to exploit the festive season.

Heightened security attention, the command said, is being given to churches, mosques, recreational centres, nightclubs, markets, motor parks and other public places expected to witness heavy human traffic.

CP Jimoh assured residents and visitors of the command’s readiness to maintain peace and order throughout the holiday period and beyond. He urged the public to stay alert, comply with the law and report suspicious activities through the nearest police station or emergency lines.

The Lagos State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a safe, orderly and crime-free Christmas and New Year celebration across the state.
