The Lagos State Police Command has debunked reports alleging that it attempted to release a foreign national accused of defiling eight minors, describing the publication as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebesin, clarified that the matter is being handled by the Gender Unit with the highest level of professionalism, integrity, and compliance with global best practices.
“The Lagos State Police Command has not and will not attempt to release any foreign national accused of child defilement. The report is entirely inaccurate and should be disregarded,” Adebesin stated.
She further explained that investigations revealed the suspect is not Lebanese, as earlier reported, but a national from a Southern African country. The Police assured that the matter is being thoroughly investigated to ensure justice is served.
According to the statement, both the alleged victim and her biological mother have given statements affirming that no act of molestation or defilement took place. However, the father of the child, who occasionally has custody, filed a separate petition which is also under review to ensure fairness.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered a discreet inquiry into the allegations to uncover the truth and cautioned the public against spreading unverified information.
The Police also reaffirmed confidence in ACP Toyin Kazeem, Officer-in-Charge of the Gender Unit, noting her outstanding service record and professionalism.
“The Command remains steadfast in its commitment to justice, especially in cases involving children and other vulnerable persons,” the statement added.
The outcome of the investigation will be made public upon completion.
