Lagos Police Confirm ‘Gun-Like Object’ Held by Pastor Adefarasin Was a Stun Gun, Not a Firearm

The Lagos State Police Command has officially responded to the controversy surrounding a viral video that appeared to show Pastor Paul Adefarasin holding a firearm while driving. Authorities have confirmed that the object seen in the video was not a gun, but a stun gun—a prohibited anti-riot device under Nigerian law.
In a statement posted on the Command’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the police clarified the nature of the object, adding that while it resembled a firearm, it is actually a non-lethal weapon typically used for self-defense or crowd control.
Adefarasin Voluntarily Reports to Police
Following the public backlash and growing concerns over the video, Pastor Adefarasin—founder of the House on the Rock Church—voluntarily presented himself at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters. He fully cooperated with law enforcement, providing a cautionary statement and undergoing interrogation.
The incident, which sparked significant debate online, featured Adefarasin allegedly pointing the object at another motorist while driving an unregistered vehicle.
Stun Gun Deemed Prohibited Under Nigerian Law
Although the stun gun is non-lethal, it is classified as prohibited anti-riot equipment, raising legal concerns over its possession and use. The police noted this classification during their investigation, which remains ongoing.
Pastor Granted Administrative Bail
After his appearance at the command headquarters, Pastor Adefarasin was granted administrative bail. The police have emphasized that their investigation is still in progress, and further updates will be made public upon its conclusion.
In their closing remarks, police authorities assured Nigerians that they are committed to transparency and due process, and the case will be handled according to the law.
