The Neo-Black Movement of Africa (NBM), Lekki Chapter, has urged the Lagos State Government to implement lasting flood control measures and establish a compensation framework for residents and businesses affected by recurring floods in the Lekki-Epe corridor.

In a statement released on Monday, NBM Lekki Chapter President, Mr. Erauyi Agbon-Ifo, expressed deep concern over the persistent flooding that continues to destroy homes, displace residents, and disrupt economic activities across one of Lagos’ most rapidly developing areas.

NBM Demands Compensation and Sustainable Flood Plan

Agbon-Ifo emphasized that the government must create a structured compensation and insurance scheme to assist victims of the annual floods, noting that many taxpayers lose property worth millions of naira each year.

“Residents deserve fair restitution for their losses. Each rainy season, families and businesses count heavy damages, yet there is no clear compensation mechanism in place,” he said.

The NBM leader called for collaborative action involving the government, private sector, and local communities to ensure long-term solutions, rather than the short-term palliative responses that often follow major flood incidents.

Strengthening Lagos Flood Infrastructure

The group urged the Lagos State Government to expand drainage systems, clear blocked stormwater channels, and carry out regular maintenance of existing infrastructure to reduce flooding. It cited Rivers State as an example of effective flood control in a region with similar coastal and climatic challenges.

NBM also advocated for intensified public awareness campaigns on proper waste disposal, climate adaptation, and flood prevention education, warning that environmental negligence remains a major cause of urban flooding in Lagos.

Call for Accountability and Action

Expressing solidarity with flood-affected families, the NBM Lekki Chapter reaffirmed its commitment to continued advocacy until Lagos authorities adopt comprehensive flood mitigation policies.

“This issue goes beyond Lekki. Flooding is now a citywide crisis, and only bold, sustainable solutions will safeguard lives, property, and future development,” Agbon-Ifo concluded.

The group reiterated that the fight against flooding in Lagos must prioritize climate resilience, infrastructural investment, and citizens’ protection to prevent further economic losses and human suffering.
