A Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja has sentenced a 61-year-old farmer, Abayomi Abraham, to 14 years’ imprisonment for attempting to sexually assault his 15-year-old biological daughter.
The presiding judge, Justice Rahman Oshodi, delivered the judgment after Abraham pleaded guilty to an amended one-count charge of attempted sexual assault by penetration.
Initially arraigned on February 21, 2024, Abraham faced four serious charges: defilement, sexual assault by penetration, attempted procurement of abortion, and indecent treatment of a child—all of which he denied. However, during the proceedings, the lead prosecutor, Ms. Bukola Okeowo, informed the court that Abraham had opted for a plea bargain agreement, prompting the amendment of charges under Section 272 of the Lagos State Criminal Law (2015).
Justice Oshodi confirmed that the defendant fully understood the implications of his guilty plea, stating:
“The convict was aware of the nature of the amended charge and the consequences of his plea. He entered it voluntarily and with legal representation.”
The court accepted Abraham’s plea and convicted him under Section 262 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, which covers attempted sexual assault by penetration.
Abraham was sentenced to 14 years in prison, with the sentence backdated to August 31, 2022—the day he was first remanded.
In addition, Justice Oshodi ordered that Abraham’s name be entered into the Lagos State Sex Offenders Register, in compliance with Sections 33 and 38 of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law of Lagos State (2021).
