The Lagos State House of Assembly has begun deliberations on a bill that seeks to establish a state-owned railway corporation to oversee the development, regulation, and operation of an integrated rail transport system across the state.

The proposed legislation, titled “A Bill for a Law to Establish the Lagos State Railway Corporation and for Connected Matters, 2025,” aims to create a solid legal framework to support efficient, safe, and sustainable railway services in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Speaking during a public hearing held on Wednesday in Lagos, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, said the initiative demonstrates the state government’s resolve to modernize its transport infrastructure and enhance the living standards of residents.

Obasa noted that the railway project would reduce road traffic congestion, improve mobility, and cut travel time, describing it as “a bold and visionary move toward transforming Lagos into a global smart city.”

He added, “Rail transport remains one of the most reliable, safe, and eco-friendly means of mass transit. It supports commerce, reduces road accidents, and boosts economic productivity.”

According to Section 26 of the bill, an Inspector of Railways will be appointed to conduct regular safety assessments, ensure the proper maintenance of trains and tracks, and guarantee smooth operations across the network.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Hon. Temitope Adedeji, emphasized that the proposed corporation would be instrumental in facilitating the movement of people and goods within the state.

Adedeji, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 1, described the bill as timely and strategic, noting that Lagos’s growing population makes it necessary to invest in modern transportation systems.

“With the city’s infrastructure expanding rapidly, the creation of a dedicated railway corporation will ensure an organized, sustainable, and efficient transport model for the future,” he said.
