Bandits who kidnapped more than 30 residents of the Eruku community during a church programme on Tuesday have reportedly demanded a ransom of N100 million per victim.

According to relatives contacted by the abductors on Thursday, the kidnappers reached out through phone calls, informing families of the huge ransom placed on their loved ones.

The attackers stormed the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, located in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing three people, abducting over 30 worshippers, and carting away valuables during the violent raid.

Chief Olusegun Olukotun, the Olori Eta of Eruku, confirmed the ransom demands, revealing that four members of his family were among those taken.

He narrated how the attack unfolded:

“I was inside the church with five of my relatives when the armed men invaded. I escaped with one of my wards by jumping out through a window around 6:06 p.m.”

Olukotun added that the kidnappers have already started contacting different families.

“From information coming from the kidnappers’ camp, they have separated the victims into groups based on their family ties and are calling our people through those groups.

“Some families have been told to pay N100 million for each abducted person. As for my relatives, I have not received any call yet, but I am expecting one,” he said.

The community leader stressed the urgent need for government intervention, noting that Eruku — a border town close to Kogi State — has long been exposed to criminal attacks due to poor security presence.

He called on authorities to strengthen security in the area and equip local vigilante teams with modern protective and combat tools capable of confronting heavily armed attackers.
