The Kwara State Government has cautioned principals of senior secondary schools across the state against imposing unauthorised fees during the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) registration exercise.
The warning was issued by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, on Tuesday during the official flag-off of the registration exercise at St. Anthony’s Secondary School, Ilorin.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rebecca Olanrewaju Bake, the Commissioner reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to affordable and quality education, stressing that extortion or diversion of students’ registration funds will not be tolerated.
“It is against government policy for any principal to charge beyond the approved amount. No student or parent should be made to pay extra under any guise,” Olohungbebe said.
He stated that the approved total registration fee for the 2026 WAEC examination remains ₦30,500, broken down into ₦27,000 for entry, ₦1,500 for e-registration, and ₦2,000 as administrative charges.
The Commissioner also directed principals to engage their Parents-Teachers Associations (PTAs) to enlighten parents about the benefits of early registration and the consequences of late submission of forms.
Olohungbebe warned that any principal caught engaging in extortion or irregularities would face strict disciplinary action, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in handling the process.
He commended the school heads for their continuous support of government education policies and their dedication to improving academic standards across the state.
“I sincerely appreciate your efforts in building a better future for our children. Your role in maintaining discipline and academic excellence cannot be overemphasised,” he said.
The Commissioner also restated the government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector through school renovation projects, provision of instructional materials, and improved welfare for teachers.
Earlier, the Director of Curriculum and Assessment, Mr. Sulaiman Ajape, advised principals to conduct the registration exercise with utmost honesty and professionalism.
Also speaking, the State President of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Comrade Mohammed Baba Saliu, urged members to adhere strictly to government guidelines and avoid any form of malpractice.
The meeting, which was attended by ministry officials and principals from all 16 Local Government Areas, ended with a renewed pledge to promote accountability and uphold ethical standards in Kwara’s education system.
