Kwankwaso open to alliance with Obi and others, forecasts fierce 2027 race

Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential flag bearer in the 2023 election, has declared his readiness to collaborate with Peter Obi and other opposition leaders in the push to remove the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power in 2027. He issued this position in an interview with BBC Hausa, where he predicted that the next presidential contest will be highly competitive.

The former governor of Kano State stated that political cooperation remains a strategic option for the NNPP, provided it aligns with the party’s commitment to protecting the interests of ordinary citizens. Although he signaled openness to working with the opposition, he did not completely discount the possibility of partnering with the ruling party, insisting that any alliance must offer measurable advantages for the NNPP.

Rumors persist that Kwankwaso is being considered as a potential running mate to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, amid speculation that Vice President Kashim Shettima may be sidelined. Kwankwaso responded by saying discussions with any party will depend entirely on clear assurances that NNPP members and its established nationwide structures will benefit.

He said the NNPP has candidates and political presence across the federation. According to him, anyone seeking the party’s support must be prepared to explain exactly what the party stands to gain. Kwankwaso confirmed that the NNPP is willing to partner with any group, whether APC, PDP, ADC, or influential figures such as Peter Obi and Goodluck Jonathan, so long as competence and integrity are prioritised.

He criticised the current administration’s handling of insecurity, describing the situation in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna as alarming. Kwankwaso accused elites of neglecting the suffering of citizens while they live comfortably in Abuja. He stressed that any political alignment must commit to education, youth empowerment, safety, and better living conditions for the Nigerian population.

Reflecting on future elections, Kwankwaso said that 2027 will be unlike previous contests due to heightened public awareness. He cited the role of radio and social media in educating the electorate on political issues and governance failures. Voters, he argued, have become more demanding of accountability and less susceptible to financial inducements.

Nigerians, he said, are actively seeking leadership capable of delivering a more secure and prosperous future. He predicted unprecedented voter behavior that could redefine the nation’s electoral history.
