Kuszczak: Manchester United’s Current Squad “Good Enough,” but Amorim Faces Tough Task to Fix Deeper Issues

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak believes the club’s current squad is “good enough” to turn things around, despite their disappointing start to the season. United’s performance under new head coach Ruben Amorim has been far from inspiring, as they sit in 13th place in the Premier League— marking their worst-ever start to a campaign.

Kuszczak, who spent several years at Old Trafford, feels the players at Amorim’s disposal possess the quality needed to succeed, despite rumors of major changes in the squad during the next two transfer windows. He acknowledged that recent signings, such as teenage centre-back Leny Yoro from Lille and Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, were costly and well-regarded players. But Kuszczak emphasized that these players are already established talents from top European clubs, and their struggles at United aren’t due to lack of ability.

“These players are not unknowns,” Kuszczak said. “They’ve proven themselves at their former clubs, and if a club like United goes for them, it’s because they are good enough.” The real issue, according to Kuszczak, lies in what happens after they arrive at Old Trafford. Despite their reputations, something isn’t clicking when they don the red jersey, and it’s up to Amorim to resolve this problem.

While there’s speculation about potential squad upheavals, Kuszczak also pointed out the difficulty of changing things mid-season. He’s seen the club’s revolving door of managers since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, with Amorim being the latest man entrusted with the task of reviving United’s fortunes. Kuszczak believes Amorim is part of a “new era” of managers who focus on modern, attacking football. However, he warned that such an approach requires balance, especially defensively, as “one bad pass could cost everything.”

United’s ongoing struggles are also a result of the increasing competitiveness of the Premier League, Kuszczak suggested. With teams like Newcastle United, Brighton, and Wolverhampton Wanderers all pushing for European spots, it’s clear that winning in the top-flight is no longer a guaranteed outcome for any side, even those with United’s stature.

Reflecting on the situation, Kuszczak said, “The Premier League has become a very solid, equal league… It is always going to be difficult, and it is going to be very difficult until the end of this season.” With United currently on track for their worst-ever points tally in the Premier League era, Kuszczak’s comments reflect the stark reality facing the club as they aim to turn things around under Amorim.
