The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has confirmed that the death toll from the boat mishap in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State has risen to 36.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when a passenger boat carrying about 80 people capsized while traveling from Akpu and Odumomo communities to Ilushi in neighboring Edo State.

According to NIWA, 40 passengers were rescued alive, while search and recovery operations are ongoing to locate others still missing.

Williams Isaac, Head of NIWA’s Idah Station, disclosed the update during an interview on NTA’s News Xtra. He revealed that most of the victims were from Onugwa and other riverine settlements in Ibaji.

He explained that those on board included women, children, and mourners returning from a burial ceremony when the tragedy struck.

Isaac further assured that NIWA is working closely with local divers, rescue agencies, and community leaders to recover more bodies and provide support to the grieving families.
