Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly weighing up a January loan move, despite renewed talks with head coach Ruben Amorim over his future at Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old, regarded as one of England’s brightest young midfielders, had initially requested a loan switch late in the summer transfer window in search of consistent playing time ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, United blocked the move, insisting he would remain part of the squad for the 2025/26 season.
Mainoo has struggled to establish himself in Amorim’s starting XI during the early stages of the campaign. He remained an unused substitute against Arsenal and Fulham before making late appearances from the bench against Burnley, Manchester City, and Chelsea. His only start this season came in the EFL Cup against Grimsby Town.
With United’s reduced fixture schedule offering fewer opportunities, the midfielder is understood to be concerned about his limited game time. According to The Mirror, Mainoo recently held further discussions with Amorim, who reassured him of his importance to the team. Nonetheless, the England international is still expected to push for a January loan unless his playing situation improves significantly.
Mainoo, whose contract runs until June 2027 with an option for a further year, remains one of the lowest-paid members of the senior squad. While he is said to remain committed to a long-term future at Old Trafford, the midfielder is aware that securing a place in England’s World Cup squad under Thomas Tuchel will require regular first-team football.
The uncertainty over his future has sparked interest from several top European clubs. Barcelona, currently without Gavi for at least five months due to a knee injury, are reportedly monitoring Mainoo ahead of the January window. Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Manchester City have also been linked with the player.
Since making his debut, Mainoo has featured 76 times for United, scoring seven goals and providing three assists. He could be handed an opportunity this weekend against Brentford, with Casemiro suspended, although Manuel Ugarte is thought to be the more likely partner for Bruno Fernandes in midfield.
