Nigerian music star Kingsley Okonkwo, widely known as Kcee, has finally spoken in detail about the long-rumoured friction between him and fellow highlife sensation Flavour.

The tension between the two artists became public in 2024 after Flavour threw a cryptic jab online, accusing an unnamed musician of copying his sound. Although no name was mentioned, Kcee felt the message was directed at him and fired back, warning Flavour against “gatekeeping” Igbo cultural music. He also reminded fans that he joined the industry before Flavour.

In a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, Kcee recounted his first encounter with Flavour years ago. According to him, talent manager Soso Soberekon once brought Flavour to him for a potential record deal.

Kcee said he declined to sign Flavour at the time because he didn’t see enough promise in him—a decision he insists has nothing to do with their current disagreement. Instead, he believes ego and superiority attitudes may be at the heart of the conflict.

“Till today, I honestly don’t understand the reason for his issue with me,” Kcee said. “Some people wrote me off, expecting that I would remain stagnant. But when you keep working and rise higher than they anticipated, it becomes a problem.”

He also emphasized that he was already successful before Flavour came into the Lagos music scene:
“Soso brought him to me back then, and I told him I couldn’t sign Flavour because I didn’t see the potential at the time. It wasn’t personal.”

Kcee added that many colleagues overlook his talent because he doesn’t boast about his achievements.
“My humility makes them underrate me. But I don’t need to brag—my work speaks. Those who doubted me have come back to apologise.”
