The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra, has given fresh details about his condition and reaction after he was handed a life imprisonment sentence on terrorism-related allegations.

The ruling, delivered on Thursday by Justice James K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, has triggered widespread reactions across Nigeria, especially among supporters of the Biafra movement.

In an update shared on his official Facebook page, Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, said he met with the IPOB leader shortly after the verdict was delivered.

According to Emmanuel, Kanu responded to the judgement with calmness and even laughter, questioning how the judge could convict him “under a law that has already been repealed,” insisting that the ruling “invalidates every action taken.”

He wrote:

“After my visit to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, I asked him to share his thoughts on Justice James K. Omotosho’s ruling.

“He laughed and questioned the legitimacy of convicting him based on a repealed law, which in his view renders the judgement null.

“He pointed out clear signs of frustration and bias in the presentation of what he described as fabricated and non-existent evidence.

“He also asked about earlier court decisions that had cleared him of wrongdoing. I agreed with his concerns. In his final words, he said the judgement was nothing more than a scripted outcome.”
