Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully thwarted a terrorist attack in Ariko Village, located in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, rescuing 31 abducted worshippers following a fierce gun battle.
The military operation was launched after a distress alert reported that armed attackers had stormed a church during Easter service and taken several congregants hostage. Acting swiftly, soldiers mobilised to the area and, with assistance from local residents, tracked the assailants into nearby terrain.
According to the Army, troops engaged the fleeing gunmen in an intense firefight, overpowering them with superior force. The pressure from advancing soldiers forced the attackers to abandon 31 captives, including one injured victim who is currently receiving medical care.
Tragically, five victims who had already been killed by the attackers were found at the scene. The Army noted that the terrorists likely suffered heavy losses during the encounter, as blood trails were discovered along their escape routes.
Security forces have since intensified operations in the area, deploying additional personnel to hunt down the perpetrators, rescue any remaining victims, and prevent further attacks.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining national security, urging citizens to continue providing timely and credible intelligence to aid ongoing operations.
The incident comes after coordinated assaults earlier on Easter Sunday, when gunmen targeted Christian worship centres in the Ariko community. The attacks reportedly occurred during early morning services, leaving multiple casualties and several others abducted.
Local officials confirmed that the attackers arrived in large numbers, opening fire on worshippers and causing widespread panic before whisking victims away into surrounding bush areas.
Authorities say investigations and security operations are ongoing to restore calm and bring those responsible to justice.
