Kaduna Court Orders 15 Cane Strokes for Man Who Stole Phones Inside Church

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna has sentenced a 23-year-old man, Kingsley Timothy, to 15 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to stealing two mobile phones valued at ₦650,000 from a church premises.

Timothy, a resident of Narayi, Kaduna, admitted to the two-count charge of theft and appealed to the court for leniency.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, who delivered the ruling, instructed that the corporal punishment be carried out and advised the young man to conduct himself properly going forward.

He cautioned that the court would not be as forgiving if Timothy reoffended.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, informed the court that the theft was reported by Richard Samuel of Christ Life Ministry on November 15.

According to him, Timothy stole a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and an Infinix phone while they were plugged in and charging inside the church.

The suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident and handed over to police authorities.

Inspector Leo stated that the act violates Section 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code (2017).
