JSS3 Student Arrested for Killing 23-Year-Old Man During School Fight in Cross River

Story:
A Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) student of Ugboro Secondary School in Bekwara Local Government Area of Cross River State has been arrested for allegedly killing a 23-year-old man during a violent incident on Tuesday.

The student, identified as Ogbeche, reportedly struck the victim, Oshen, on the head with a heavy wooden pestle while a fight was being broken up after school hours.

Eyewitnesses said the fight began between Ogbeche and another student, Nicholas, before the deceased intervened in an attempt to separate them. However, Ogbeche allegedly accused Oshen of taking sides with his opponent, left the fight, and returned with a pestle.

“People were shouting for him to drop it, but he ignored the warnings and hit Oshen on the head,” an eyewitness, Lizzy, recounted. “The pestles we use here are very heavy, and that single strike caused severe damage.”

The victim collapsed on the spot and was rushed to a hospital in Ogoja, where he later died the same night.

Residents described the suspect as a notorious student with a history of violent behavior, including attacking fellow students with machetes during previous altercations, though no life had been lost until this incident.

The deceased, identified as the son of the late Oshen Ushaka, a once-prominent figure in Bekwara, was buried in his family compound.

Police authorities confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody and is currently remanded at the Ogoja Correctional Centre pending further investigation.
